Christ charged His disciples to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28: 19). Baptism is the vitae spiritualis ianua, the gateway to spiritual life which leads to the other sacraments. It is a new birth into life and death of Our Lord Jesus Christ, which destroys the old man bound by the original sin of our first parents and promises the realization of that New Man Whose resurrection gives hope for eternal life (cf. Romans 6: 3 through 11). Through baptism, the individual is indelibly sealed, identifying him as a follower of Christ and incorporating him into the Church, the Body of Christ: “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body” (Ephesians 4: 25).

Baptism is celebrated by the pouring of water over the head (or, immersion into water) three times accompanied by the words spoken by the minister: “I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

Requirements:

  • Any person not yet baptized may be baptized (CIC 864)
  • Adults must undergo preparatory instruction in the Faith prior to baptism (CIC 851.1).
  • For infants to be baptized, at least one parent must give consent and there must also exist a reasonable expectation that the child will be brought up in the Catholic religion (CIC 868).
In Our Parish:
  • For baptism at St. Dominic’s Parish, at least one parent must be a registered parishioner. For the first child to be baptized, there is a required instruction class. To register for the class and/or to schedule a baptism, call the Parish Office (620-276-2024).
